4 Signs It’s Time for a New Couch

Couches tend to be the focal point of most sitting rooms. It’s rare to see a home that doesn’t have at least one couch. Sofas purchased today have a lifespan of around 7-12 years, and you’ll frequently see couches in great condition at thrift shops. You also see couches on the curb that look like they exploded. Here are some warning signs it’s time to start shopping for a new couch before it falls apart.

Signs it’s time for a new couch, Ethan Allen furniture near Newburgh, New York (NY).

The Piece Doesn’t Fit the Space

People often keep their first couch and move it when they upgrade to homeownership. Unfortunately, the couch from your first apartment doesn’t always match the new space. A small couch may look awkward and lost in a large space but can be moved to a study or spare bedroom. A couch that is too large, however, can’t be shoved into a too-small space. If the couch rubs on another surface frequently the upholstery will wear too quickly, and the frame could be damaged.

Your Couch is Noisy

When you begin to hear creaking or popping noises when someone sits down its signs of structural damage. Joints on wooden and metal frame couches wear out over time, as do metal springs. Years ago, furniture was constructed using hardwood and screws. Today’s less expensive options are made from manufactured wood held together with epoxy and staples. Unless your couch is an older family heirloom, it’s just not worth it to repair. Fixing structural damage will cost you about as much as a new couch.

Flat Cushions and Missing Lumbar Support

Nobody enjoys having to climb out of their couch when they want to stand up. If your cushions feel as padded as a hardwood floor, it’s time to start to move on. Cushion fill can occasionally be replaced, but if the rest of the couch is falling into disrepair it’s best to just get a new one.

Your Tastes Have Changed

At one time, that bold print was something you loved. Fast forward a few years and neutral tones may be more your style. Don’t live with a piece of furniture that you hate. Another issue you can run into is worn upholstery with stains and discolorations. Fading happens when the couch is exposed to sunlight, and stains occur as a part of daily use. If you’re undecided between reupholstering and replacing, opt for a nice slipcover to hold you over.
