Area Rugs for Every Room

Ask any interior designer, and they’ll tell you that area rugs are always a good idea. Area rugs can enhance the look of any floor, but their aesthetic appeal is only one of the reasons why area rugs are a great idea. Bell’s Ethan Allen Design Center is here to share how area rugs can improve your home.

Aesthetic Appeal

We know we just said there’s more to an area rug than its good looks, but the aesthetic appeal is one of the primary reasons you bring area rugs into your home. An area rug can add visual interest and a pop of color to a space with a neutral color palette. You can also use a rug to pull together various colors in a room. The shape of your rug can be used to complement the curves of furniture, such as an oval dining room table.

Break Up a Large Space

In large living rooms or basement seating areas, an area rug can create more intimate zones that invite family and friends to sit and relax. A rug large enough to set a coffee table and the front legs of all furniture will also help to ground a space. You can use a single rug or multiple area rugs to make several welcoming seating arrangements in a cavernous space.

Add Warmth

Hardwood and tile floors are beautiful but can be chilly under bare feet, especially in the bedroom. Try placing a small area rug at the foot of your bed for a more modern touch. The soft texture of area rugs is also great for adding a metaphorical warmth to a starkly decorated area.

Reduce Noise, Increase Safety

Rooms with hard floors often echo because the solid materials do not absorb sound. A well-placed area rug will absorb the sound of footsteps and voices to create a more comforting space. The traction an area rug provides will also reduce slips and falls, especially in homes with children or seniors.

Area Rugs: Selecting a Size

Area rugs are available in a vast array of shapes and sizes. The one you choose depends mostly on your preference, but there are a few basic style rules surrounding the size and placement of area rugs. For rugs in a sitting area, choose one that allows the front legs of the furniture to rest on the rug or one that accommodates the furniture entirely. If you’re placing a rug in your dining room, you’ll want a rug that allows all legs of the chairs to remain on the rug, even when pushed back from the table.
