Fabrics

Fabric is essential to interior decoration. It provides color, pattern, and texture to your room, and at Bell’s Ethan Allen Design Center, we pride ourselves on offering the best to our customers. We have a range of fabrics from Hunter Douglas Design Studio™ and our own fabric library for custom drapery, curtains, swags, and roman shades, as well as for soft home accents like decorative pillows and duvet covers. Be creative with simple basics, smooth silks, and coarse linen. Liven up your living room with fresh upholstery, or just new accent pillows. Our fabrics are sure to enhance your interiors and create an inviting space for you and your guests.

Fabric and Interior Design

Of the seven elements of interior design - space, color, pattern, texture, line, light, and forms - fabric can encompass three all at once. For example, a red herringbone tweed accent pillow brings a pop of color to a beige couch. The tweed helps to give your space a more rustic feel while the herringbone pattern keeps your pillow more sophisticated. Fabrics are part of the construction of so many of your interior elements: from the rug on your floor to the upholstery of your sofa, and the duvet and pillows of your bed to the drapes on your windows. It is quintessential to the look and feel of your room, and with so many color, texture, and pattern combinations, homeowners have countless opportunities to find the look and feel they like best.

Choosing Your Fabric

The fabric you choose will ultimately depend on your needs: a light, airy fabric is necessary for curtains, but a heavier, soft velvet gives room-darkening drapes their luxurious silhouette. It’s crucial to keep your needs but also the quality of the fabric, in mind when choosing your fabric: a distinctly textured duvet might be the textile element you’re looking for but looking and feeling are two different senses - no one wants a scratchy blanket, much less a scratchy duvet. Roman shades require less textile contact and so might be better able to carry a desired textured element than a bedroom pillow or duvet.

Once you’ve defined the purpose and destination of your fabric, further elements to consider would be its expected frequency of use and resistance to wear. An important example is that dining rooms chairs should be upholstered to be able to keep you and guests comfortable for longer meals and celebrations. Here, it is critical to keep in mind who will be in your dining room, and how often: velvet may look classy and refined, but it will show signs of wear faster than performance fabrics that are specially developed to be more wear- and stain-resistant. Fabrics that are easy to clean perform well in homes with kids and pets, as wrinkle-resistant fabric for curtains and drapery makes caring and upkeep of your home accents worry and hassle-free.
