Quality sleep keeps you healthy and productive throughout the day. Types of Mattresses

Beginning your search for the perfect mattress can be daunting, so we're helping you narrow it down by sharing the most common types:

Innerspring

The most traditional mattress style is also the most budget-friendly variety. The support system is made using metal coils - the space between the coils makes them a very breathable option. Innerspring mattresses are durable and offer lots of bounce.

Foam

Most foam mattresses use memory foam and offer high contouring and pressure relief levels. Another perk of memory foam is the significant motion isolation. This means you won't wake up whenever your partner enters or leaves the bed.

Latex

Natural latex is a sustainable material, making it popular among eco-conscious consumers. Natural and synthetic latex are known for delivering moderate contouring with great bounce and durability.

Hybrid

A hybrid mattress combines innerspring support with additional comfort layers using foam or latex. The combination of materials provides support and contouring and is a good fit for any sleeping position.

How Long Does a Mattress Last?

The longevity of your mattress depends on several factors, but you can expect to get between five and seven years from most. These things impact your mattress's lifespan:

  • Maintenance and Care: It's important to rotate your mattress four times a year. Depending on the type of mattress, you can flip it, but make sure you have a double-sided mattress before doing so. Clean your bedding weekly and your mattress monthly, and try to keep your pets off the bed.
  • Type/Material: A mid-quality innerspring mattress may need replacing in as few as three to five years, while a top-quality hybrid can last over a decade. All mattresses will begin to sag after about seven years, so consider replacing yours around this mark.
  • Quality: As with most things, the higher quality you start with, the longer it will last.
  • Single or Couple: A mattress slept on by a single person will last significantly longer than one used by a couple.

Mattresses Come in Many Sizes

Are you unsure what size mattress would work best for you? Consider the following:

  • Twin: A twin mattress is perfect for single sleepers and children. With dimensions of 38x75", it can easily fit into most bedrooms. Twin XL (38x80") is a perfect size for taller people.
  • Full: Larger than a twin and less expensive than a queen, a full mattress is ideal for single adults or couples with smaller bedrooms. Full-size mattresses are 53x75".
  • Queen: Queen mattresses are the most popular mattress in North America because they offer more space than a full one but are less expensive than a king-size mattress. A queen mattress is 60x80".
  • King: Large enough to dominate a small room, king mattresses are 76x80", with plenty of room for everyone to sleep comfortably.

Choosing the Firmness of Your Mattress

First, the firmness of a mattress is not an indicator of its level of support. The firmness refers to how hard or soft the bed feels, while the support material determines the support. This means you can prefer a softer mattress and still get much support and pressure relief. A scale from 1-10 is used by every manufacturer, with one being the softest and 10 being the most firm.

Beyond the scale, every mattress company has its term for how soft a mattress is. Ethan Allen, for example, offers ultra plush, plush, and firm options. If you're trying mattresses out in-store, take at least 15-20 minutes to get an accurate idea of how the mattress feels underneath you.

Have you ever bought a pair of shoes after trying them on for only a minute, to discover they are incredibly uncomfortable after you wear them for an hour? Mattresses work the same way.
